Where video game industry veterans introduce great board games to video gamers

GA Show #182: Reviving older, classic board games (guest: Rob Daviau)

Our guest is creating a legacy for himself in the board game biz.

So many board game remakes, redos, or sequels have been hitting store shelves lately that: 1.) It's been keeping us very busy with new-old games to play (more on that in the next episode). And 2.) It made us realize there's a perfect guest out there to get on this show to discuss this.

Enter Rob Daviau. He's perhaps most well-known for creating the "legacy" concept and genre in which board games get permanently altered as players progress through their chapters (see: Pandemic Legacy, Risk Legacy). He's also working on The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit, the highly anticipated follow-up to the well-beloved and long out of print Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit. Oh, and he co-founded Restoration Games, a publisher whose entire existence revolves around reviving older games with fresh coats of deluxe-ness.

Perfect, right?

We chat about restoring games, the business of making sequels, and more. (Normally, our guest would choose the main topic, but this time, we let him go after our Game Picks and a brief discussion -- and Christina and Shoe will continue without him with way too many new sequels, remakes, and updated board games to talk about in the next episode.)

Chapters:

  • Going Analog's Game Pick: Bookwyrm.
  • Rob's Game Pick: Pathfinder (no, not that Pathfinder).
  • Discussion! Restoration games, sequels, remakes, and more.

Note: We said Bookwyrm, our Game Pick, is live on Kickstarter now, but we had to cancel another episode and move this one up by two weeks. The Kickstarter will be launching on September 22.
